WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY? 

Musculoskeletal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing and reduce pain in various musculoskeletal conditions.

 

ESWT has been shown to be an effective treatment option for many musculoskeletal disorders, including chronic plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, lateral epicondylitis, and shoulder calcific tendinopathy. It is more commonly being used effectively for a range of other muscle and tendon problems which the research is catching up with.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

ESWT works by delivering high-energy acoustic waves to the affected area, which can stimulate the body's natural healing response. The shockwaves help increase blood flow and promote the growth of new blood vessels, which can help reduce pain and inflammation, which accelerates the healing process. Additionally, ESWT can help break up calcifications and scar tissue, allowing the body to more effectively heal the affected area. Combining shock-wave with physiotherapy rehabilitation has the better results. 

ESWT is typically recommended when other conservative treatment options have failed to alleviate symptoms. It may also be recommended as a first-line treatment option for certain conditions, such as plantar fasciitis.   • Bruising or swelling: Some patients may experience bruising or swelling at the treatment site.

  • Rare complications: In rare cases, ESWT can cause more serious complications such as damage to surrounding tissues, these will be discussed with you at your appointment.
